Challenge |
To develop a reliable and effective automated process monitoring system for all Anglo Platinum’s 20 plants across South Africa, providing them not only with a reliable monitoring tool, but also delivering fault diagnostic abilities to metallurgists and instrumentation professionals alike. The system must enable responsible managers and technologists to perform the monitoring and diagnostic functions both at the plant level as well as from a centralised location in Rustenburg. |
|
Solution |
Using the consultancy services of OPTI-NUM solutions and MATLAB’s computational abilities, including the supporting capabilities of its Database, Statistics, Image Processing and Signal Processing Toolboxes, to design and develop a highly specialised Operational Process Monitoring application that runs 26 standardised daily reports on plant performance at each of their plants nationally. These reports reflect plant performance based on advanced analytical techniques and graphical displays using MATLAB, enabling metallurgists and instrumentation technologists to focus on potential problem areas in order to correct or improve performance on remote sites in conjunction with plant managers. |

Results |
- Plant metallurgists and instrumentation technologists can monitor operations and equipment on site and diagnose deviations and malfunctions in fractions of the time required previously, resulting in greatly enhanced plant optimisation and productions recoveries. - A small number of metallurgists and instrumentation engineers can successfully monitor 20 Anglo Platinum plants remotely from their offices in Johannesburg and Rustenburg. - Anglo Platinum has the ability to extend the analysis techniques and reporting structure as required over time – all within the base infrastructure. |
